Recall the prophecy about Babylon revealed to Isaiah, son of Amoz. Signal them from the barren mountain, speak loudly, and wave your hand for them to enter the strongholds of the wicked! I have commanded my holy army; I have called those mighty in my anger, those who rejoice in my splendor. Hear the tumultuous

They come from a far-off country, from the ends of the earth; the LORD and his instruments of wrath will bring destruction to the whole world. Cry out in grief, for the day of the LORD draws near; it descends as devastation from the Almighty. Therefore, every hand will grow feeble, and every human heart will lose courage. Terror grips them; agony and pain overtake them; they twist in torment like a woman giving birth; they stare at each other in shock, their faces flushed. See, the day of the Lord is approaching, merciless, filled with rage and burning anger, to make the earth a wasteland and eradicate its wrongdoers. Indeed, the stars and constellations of the heavens will withhold their light; the sun will be dark when it rises, and the moon will not shine. I will bring judgment upon the world for its evil, and upon the wicked for their sins. I will crush the arrogance of the proud and humble the tyranny of the oppressors.

Humankind will become scarce, more so than the purest gold of Ophir. Indeed, the heavens will tremble, and the earth will be shaken to its core by the fury of the LORD Almighty on the day of his burning wrath. Like startled gazelles, like scattered sheep without a shepherd, the people will turn to their own and flee to their native lands. Whoever is found will be pierced through, and whoever is caught will die by the sword. Their infants will be smashed before their very eyes, their homes ransacked, and their wives violated, for I will rouse the Medes against them, a people who care not for silver nor desire gold. Their bows will strike down the young men; they will show no mercy to the unborn, nor will their eyes pity children. And Babylon, the jewel of kingdoms, the glorious pride of the Chaldeans, will become like Sodom and Gomorrah when God overthrew them. It will never be lived in again; no one will dwell there. No Arab will pitch his tent there, nor will shepherds rest their flocks there. Desert creatures will make their dens there, owls will fill their houses, ostriches will live there, and wild goats will skip about. Jackals will cry out in its once grand buildings, and wild dogs in its luxurious places. Its appointed time is close, and its days will not be extended.
