The prophet Hosea delivered a stark warning to the northern Kingdom of Israel: "My people are destroyed because they have no knowledge" (Hosea 4:6). This destruction stemmed not from worldly ignorance, but from spiritual infidelity—a life of "spiritual adultery" exemplified by their worship of false gods. God commanded Hosea to marry an unfaithful prostitute as a powerful, symbolic message to underscore this truth. His mission was to warn the people that they faced imminent destruction by the Assyrians because they lacked vital spiritual knowledge regarding their true relationship with God.

The Nature of True Knowledge

The "knowledge" Hosea speaks of is not scientific, aesthetic, or related to everyday life. It is the profound knowledge of the transcendent God and His Will—a spiritual insight acquired solely through faith in God's revelation.

Despite having God's revelation through Moses and the prophets, the Israelites lacked the genuine faith required to truly know Him. Hosea's message further revealed that their lack of the saving knowledge that flows from authentic faith in God's Word was the precise cause of their ruin.

A Timeless, Universal Warning

Hosea’s warning transcends his specific time and place; it remains a universal, timeless message. A deficiency in spiritual knowledge has devastating implications for one's life, both in the present and for eternity.

To willfully ignore God’s revelation is to disregard the most fundamental reality of human existence: our inescapable relationship with an Almighty God. We are His creatures, subject to His authority and accountable to Him. As the book of Proverbs affirms, "Knowledge begins with fear and respect for the LORD" (Proverbs 1:7). Without this foundational and true Knowledge of God, all other forms of knowledge are ultimately without purpose.

Therefore, the most crucial pursuit for humanity is to get knowledge. In the contemporary world, this essential, authoritative knowledge is primarily revealed in the Bible.
